Evolution...

I have been listening to Machine Head not since their debute album "Burn My Eyes" (as most) but since "The Burning Red", which most people think is their worst album. I think it was their softest, but you can hear they can do pretty much everything music-wise. After "Through The Ashes Of Empires", which I think is an absolute masterpiece they raised the bar very high. With "The Blackening" they were on their absolute best. Reading some of the lyrics made me appreciate Machine Head on every level. (PLEASE PLEASE look up the lyrics for "Clenching The Fists Of Dissent"!!!) Their vocals, lyrics, guitar solo's, everything is in perfect tune! I think they raised the bar even higher and it got very high to top that. They toured for four years on that album and I have seen them perform 3 times in that period. The last performance they weren's as tight as before, so in my opinion they toured a little bit too long.

And then there was a new album. Hearing their first online-single "Locust" made me very curious. It felt a little catchier than "The Blackening" but dit not disappoint me at all. Then the album came out. Even though I already pre-ordered it it was online a little before that and I couldn't resist. My favourite tracks are "I Am Hell", which is loud, well put together, an all-together song. And then "This Is The End". I can keep on listening to the intro. The track "Who We Are" starts with their own kids singing an intro raw and out of key and then the raw but hard vocals of Robb Flynn take over singing the same line but now with guitars. I like the fact they used their own children and on the dvd that came with it you see the part the children sing is supposed to be a little unfinished. Also I was very suprised hearing "Darkness within" which is a regular Nickelback MTV hit if you hear the acoustic version bonus track. The regular version is way better and a lot less dull!

I think this album is a very worthy succesor to "The Blackening" but it does not raise the bar. It stays the same. Especially because there are just 7 tracks. The 3 bonus tracks on this release are fun to hear, but definetely nog great masterpieces. Looking forward to seeing them play live with "Unto The Locust" in november!

Conclusion: The album is just to short to top "The Blackening", but definetely has some masterpieces making it worth buying!

Havn't listened to it yet but if it anything like 'Burn My Eyes' im sure i'll love it.
Anyone who hasn't listened to Burn my eyes should go and buy it RIGHT NOW !

Great album, tends to get better the more I listen to it. Due to the fact that there are only 7 songs (not counting the covers) on this album, their previous album might be a little bit better.
